"Our Song is Grace" - The Message Behind the Music

There are some songs that are a true labor and others that seem to pour out of you. Our Song is Grace was the latter. As a writer, I sometimes get bogged down in my awareness of how short of the mark I fall and I find myself writing a lot of repentance songs, but this one is a song that is celebrating the life that has experienced grace, celebrating the author of grace.

“But far be it from me to boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.” - Galatians 6:14

We are called to be a singing people who point at, revel in, boast in the work of the cross. The work of the cross stands opposed to the rest of our world. When we talk about our freedom, our hope, our forgiveness, it is all through the lens of the cross. So I wanted to marry the fact that we are called to be a people who sing, with that vision of our forgiveness, and that union resulted in Our Song is Grace.

The song itself is really divided up into three movements with three explicit purposes:

1.     The Verses – These are the moments in the song that I took to sing our ambition and our longing to God. We are asking him to search our heart, focus us, and reveal his plans for us

2.     The Chorus – This is the follow-up to the verses that simply says, “here’s why I can, with confidence, ask the things in the verses of You”

3.     The Bridge – This passage is praising his love and grace specifically

I'm excited for we as the church to embrace this message together and lift it up in song.

LYRICS:

Verse 1:

Resurrect the places in our hearts

Dead but not beyond Your reach

Find us in our suffering

Reconstruct from plans in Your own hand

Life beyond captivity

Freedom won at Calvary

Chorus:

Our song is grace

The saints and angels sing

The melody of coming home

The melody of being known

Our song is grace

The song that heaven sings

The rhyme of restless wanderers

The cry for our Deliverer

Our song is Grace

Verse 2:

All our debts were paid upon the cross

Beauty from our broken king

Crucified to make us clean

Tune our hearts to hear the world Your way

Sent to be Your hands and feet

Marching on to Your heartbeat

Chorus:

Our song is grace

The saints and angels sing

The melody of coming home

The melody of being known

Our song is grace

The song that heaven sings

The rhyme of restless wanderers

The cry for our Deliverer

Our song is Grace

Bridge:

It’s Your love that satisfies us

And Your grace gives sight to see

It’s Your love that conquers darkness

And Your grace the song we sing
